Hippo's Hot Dogs restaurant has been around for decades in their Troy, Michigan location. Chances are if you live anywhere close to Hippo's, you already know all about it.

My family's love affair with Hippo's started 5 or 6 years ago when my husband drove past it and wanted to try it. Hippo's is a cozy little family restaurant with deep history in its offbeat decor. The walls are full of the restaurant's history and customer tributes to the Hippo's tradition. Hippo's is family-owned and the owner, Gene Lukas, is a fixture in the community. Hippo's has provided catering for numerous community events and for charity. True Hippo's fans take advantage of Hippo's catering for parties large and small.

Hippo's is extremely affordable and endured itself to our family because they were very willing to work with my daughter's numerous food allergies. Plus, the taste of all the Hippo's hot dogs is fantastic!

The most famous menu item at Hippo's is the Hippo Dog. A Hippo Dog is a Chicago-style hot dog (mustard, relish, onion, pickle and peppers served on a seasoned bun). I've tried to duplicate the Hippo's Hippo Dog at home with little success. Hippo's uses a seasoning on them that puts the taste over the top. Hippo's Hot Dogs serves 8 different hot dog and coney varieties. In addition to the hot dogs, Hippo's serves Polish Sausages, Italian Beef Sandwiches, brats, chicken, soups, salads and french fries. The french fries are incredible!

The food at Hippo's is a good value and it's a place kids love to go. You may not think of traveling too far in Oakland County to go to a hot dog place but Hippo's is worth the trip. Trust me, Hippo's is pretty far from my house but we seem to always make a special trip to Hippo's when we're craving comfort food in a fun atmosphere.
